It was about 9 pm on a Thursday and while we were assured a dry night, it had not given up on pouring down rain! Ray and me were relaxing there commenting on the recent football rankings, at the ready for the next telephone call to come in. Eventually we had a call from a girl on a business expedition who had arrived at the BP petrol station in Dog and Gun and put petrol in her diesel gorgeous Toyota Land Cruiser hire car. The unfortunate lady was rather irritated it seemed, telling me "I still can't believe I have wrecked the vehicle! I am just so accustomed to filling up my petrol car I totally forgot that I was using a diesel!" I instructed her to settle back and not to be concerned, and that these things unfortunately often happen. She had managed to maneuver the vehicle into a secure spot and, because it was just a few miles away from where we were, we could reach the customer quickly. The bad fuel was removed and she could return to the motel she was lodging at. Although we got really soaked, it was all worthwhile to see her drive away relaxed and less stressed. One more misfuel correction in Merseyside done well in my opinion!

The 3 things you MUST know about a Misfuel!

AdBlue In Your Diesel

Throughout Merseyside we are finding an increasing number of cases of AdBlue contamination when a motorist has put AdBlue right into their diesel tank. This is mainly due to people not being totally sure the right way to use it (pay attention: it is not a fuel additive), and in part because the inlets for diesel and AdBlue are usually right adjacent to one another on the vehicle.

Now, exactly what is the trouble with putting AdBlue in a diesel vehicle?

Since AdBlue is predominantly ionised water, it's nearly as good as putting water in your tank. Diesel and water do not ever blend in the least and attempting to run a diesel car on water cannot work. In addition to this, the urea is quite corrosive to your fuel system lines and seals and is at risk of crystalising, obstructing injectors and filters. In case you poured AdBlue into your fuel tank remove it as quickly as possible. And definitely take care not to turn over the car - not even to shift it into a parking spot. In cases where you have started the vehicle you may probably have to have the full fuel system flushed and filters changed.

Call us if it turns out you have suffered from AdBlue contamination. We will help. We are Specialists in dealing with contaminated fuel and are able to attend to every type of AdBlue contamination.

Waste Fuel Removal

Have a fuel reservoir placed at the back of your garden full of unwanted, unusable or degraded fuel? We're able to help you to get rid of it. We've been called out to many privately owned and industrial premises in Merseyside for the purpose of draining and recycling fuel storages. We are licenced by the Environment Agency to enable us to extract and recycle waste fuel legally and safely.

Regardless of whether the fuel storage is an underground reservoir, a mobile bowser, or perhaps several containers in a garage, assuming that we can access it, we can certainly empty it for you.

How to find out if I put the wrong fuel in my car?

If you’ve just filled up at a petrol station and the cars starts to act a bit strange you might start to wonder if you accidentally put the wrong fuel in it.

Well, there are a few things to can check that will be able to tell you:

  1. How is the car responding? There are some very common misfuel symptoms which can be a good indicator of wrong fuel:
    • Loss of engine power – can feel like the car has run out of fuel
    • A lot of smoke (more than usual)
    • Engine coughing or starting to splutter
    • Won’t start – or keeps stalling.
  2. Look at your fuel receipt. It will state clearly if you filled up with diesel or unleaded. If you don’t have the receipt, you can often return to the petrol station where you filled up and give them the date and time (and pump) where you refueled and they will often be able to give you a VAT receipt.
  3. Smell it. Diesel and petrol have very distinctly different smells. Anyone familiar with the motor industry should be able to help you with this. Or you could even get another car to park alongside and smell the fuel caps of both, comparing them to determine what the fuel type is.
  4. Call us to come out and assess the car. In the majority of cases we will be able to tell if the car has been misfueled before beginning work on it. If we discover that the vehicle does not need a fuel drain, you will only be charged a call-out fee.
